According to British chip designer ARM, the region is innovating at a faster pace than ever before to meet the needs of its 1.3 billion-strong consumer base, and the West is beginning to sit up and take notice.
IC Insight's McClean report, which ranks the top 50 global semiconductor suppliers by sales, saw Taiwan-based MediaTek jump from 22nd to 16th in 2013 after almost doubling sales.

- 2014-05-08 Chip Market's Bullish Run Continues
The three-month average of worldwide chip sales was $26.16 billion in March, up 11.4% over the equivalent figure in March 2013, according to the United States Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), referencing data compiled by the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) organization.
Sequentially, the three-month average sales were rose 0.4% from $26.04 billion in February 2014, a figure that had been revised upward from $25.87 billion. The uplift for February resulted in year-on-year growth of 12.1% in February and, in consequence, a slight moderation in the growth rate in March. Nonetheless, first-quarter global chip sales were the highest ever.

- Spansion Inc., armed with a combination of flash, microcontroller, and power management in its portfolio, is moving aggressively into the automotive sector.
Synergy, or integration, is no longer the stated goal behind Spansion's acquisition last summer of Fujitsu Semiconductor's MCU and analog businesses. As demonstrated in its first-quarter results, Spansion is now scoring design wins globally, especially in the automotive and industrial sectors. “We are making significant progress with our acquired product lines,” said John Kispert, CEO of Spansion, during the financial call Tuesday, May 6.
Spansion, for the first quarter ended March 2014, reported net sales of $311.8 million, a 64 percent increase compared to the same quarter a year ago.
